Kunti’s Boons and Sons.
Once Durvasa the angry sage visited the Palace of Kuntibojan
and he was welcomed by the King and
requested to stay in his palace for some time and extended him a nice treatment.
The king had asked his daughter Kunti to look after the sage
and take care of all his needs. Kunti was the daughter of Soora and was
initially christened as Birutha. She was adopted by Kuntibojan as he did not have any child of his own and rechristened her as
Kunti. Soora was a grand father to Lord Krishna.
Kunti was so courteous and
obedient and provided a good and luxurious treatment to Durvasa The sage was
so happy and enamoured by this service he gave her a boon by which she could
exercise any time to have sons from any of the five gods of Indra, Vayu, Yama,
Sun ,Aswani brothers. Durwasa could visualise that Kunti would have problem in having sons
from her Husband.
As Kunti was very young and immature she immediately used boon and called the God of Sun and immediately the Sun God came
before her. She was terrified and told him to go back. But Sun god said since he was
called to come to father a son to her he could not go just like that and he gave her a
son and said after the delivery of the son Kunti would again become a virgin. So Kunti
immediately delivered a male child and as she was not married she put the child
into a Box with all the ornaments, a shawl and left him in the river. This
child was found and saved by a Charioteer of the Kauravas and was christened as Karna who was a
valiant warrior who fought with the Kauravas and died in the battle field of Kurushetra later.
After the marriage of Kunti with the Pandava King Pandu
this boon came to her help as king Pandu had a curse which forbid him from
making contact with any woman and as per the curse, once he came into contact with a woman he
would die.
So Kunti used the boons to have sons of Dharma or yama
, Vayu
and Indra who were christened as Udhishtra, Bheema and Arjun. She gave
the last boon to Madhuri, the second wife of Pandu who used it to get two sons
Nahul and Sahadev from the Aswini brothers.
So Pandu had six sons through the Gods to have his family
tree of Pandavas out of which one, Karna was left in the river . Karna who was the eldest son of Kunti only was separated from
her and went to the Kaurava side because Duryodhana favoured him as a challenge and equla to Arjun and made him the King of Anga, a state of Kauravas kingdom.
