Lord Krishna Helps Draupathi From Sage Durvasa

Once the very angry and highly short tempered sage Durvasa went and met Duryodhana with all his ten thousand disciples.

Duryodhana was very careful and treated him with utmost care and fed him and his disciples and looked after him for his comfort and care and his disciples. The sage was very much impressed and happy and asked Duryodhana what favours he could get from him for this. Duryodhana as always cunning and wanted to give trouble to the Pandavas asked the sage to go to the Pandavas after they had taken their food at Lunch time and  demand  food for him and his ten thousand disciples. He was of the opinion that when the sage and his disciples go after the Pandavas had taken their food and when no food available the bad tempered Sage would  curse the Pandavas and they would suffer from his curse. This was his intention. The sage readily agreed to his proposal and came to the Jungle and visited the abode of the Pandavas after their lunch with all his disciples.

Long before this,Udhishtra had prayed to Sun god and did penance and the Sun God had given him a Vessel called 'Akshya Patra' which will give food for any number of people continuously till Panchali or Draupathi the wife of Pandavas eats. After her eating it would not give any more food for that day. The sage has timed his visit in such a way that when he visited their home Draupathi had taken her lunch and the vessel had stopped producing food for that day. Even though Udhistra was worried, he  asked the sage and his disciples  to go and have a bath in the river and on their return they could have their lunch.

The sage agreed and went for his bath with his ten thousand disciples. Udhishtra was worried and he was aware of the anger of the sage and his possible curse if food was not given to him on his return from his bath. Draupathi was much more worried and prayed to Lord Krishna to come and alleviate her problem and save her.

Krishna came to her and told her that he was terribly hungry and wanted to have food and asked her to provide food for him. Draupathi was crestfallen and told him that the 'Akshaya Patra' would not give food after her eating and the vessel was washed and kept.

Krishna smiled and said “no I am hungry and bring me the vessel and I want to see it myself.” Draupathi brought the vessel reluctantly and Krishna looked for any trace of food in it and found one rice and one small leaf sticking to the vessel as it was not washed properly. He took the rice and the leaf and ate it and said happily that his hunger was over with this sumptuous food. Draupthi was ashamed by his action and her guilt in not able to provide food for her beloved God  but Krishna consoled her and said her problem was solved.

The sage who was taking bath and his disciples were suddenly found their stomachs full of food and could not even move. They were afraid to come for their food at Udhishtra’s abode and went to their home from the riverside  without even coming to the Hut of Udhistra thinking that  he would be waiting with food for them as he had promised. Durvasa sent word to Udhistra saying that he was not hungry and was going away and his action of not being a guest to Udhishtra could be condoned.

Thus Lord Krishna had saved the Pandavas by eating the left over rice and leaf which has filled the stomach of all the disciples and sage Durvasa as when God is not hungry his followers would not be in hunger.
