Devavridha's ( 'BHEESHMA's) Vow

Shantanu after getting the custody of his son Devavridha from his wife Ganga  was quite happy and lived happily with him while his son went on expanding the country by fighting and defeating many kings by his valour and strength. Shantanu did not marry again.
One day as Shantanu was walking on the banks of Ganga and suddenly  he felt a fragranceso pleasant and attractive, he went after it and saw a very beautiful woman and found the fragrance was from her. She was a fisher woamn and had got he fragrance from a sage as a boon.
Shantanu was immediately attracted by her beauty and proposed to marry  her. She said as she was having her father to look after her  it was upto his discretion to give her get married to the King Shantanu. Shantanu went after her father who was the head of the fisher men.
The fisherman's head agreed to marry her to Shantanu on one condition. As she is so beautiful and  precious she had to be the queen and only her sons should ascend the throne. Since Shantanu had one son already, it could not be possible and hence he refused to marry her to Shantanu.
Shantanu was disappointed and crest fallen and went back to the palace and was in a a sorrow mood. Seeing this Devavridha asked him for the reason but he did not say the reason. But Devavridha went and found out the reason himself and consoled his father and promised to make him marry that fisher woman.

Devavridha went to the Fisher man and asked him for the hand of The Fisher woman whose name was Satyavati. The fisher man repeated the request to him and Devavridha promised to abdicate his right to the Throne for the sons of Satyavati. But the cunning fisherman further said  "Ok you promis to abdicate but your sons would come and challenge the throne, so I would not allow that to happen."

Hearing this Devavridha Thundered and declared  that he would never marry and hence would not have any sons to claim the throne. Hearing this there were voices calling  'BHEESHMA', 'BHEESHMA' and flowers poured over him from the heaven. 'BHEESHMA' means a man who did remarkable feats. So from that day Devavridha was called 'BHEESHMA'. The fisher man was impressed with this and readily agreed to marry his daughter Satyavati to Shantanu.

Devavridha ( 'BHEESHMA') went to his father and told him about his proposal  and got him married to Satyavati and remained a bachelor till he was killed in the battle field.
